Pancretic Diseases
The pancreas is a gland (like the salivary glands in the mouth) that squirts digestive enzymes into the intestine to help digest food coming out of the stomach. The pancreas also has cells that release insulin into the blood stream that tells the organs of the body what to do with the nutrients from the food. Digestive enzymes are biological scissors that chop proteins into amino acids, carbohydrates into sugars, and complex fats into fatty acids so that these small molecules can pass through the intestinal lining and enter the blood stream. In some cases the digestive enzymes become active inside the pancreas, causing the gland to digest itself. For more on the pancreas and pancreas diseases (including acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, pancreatogenic diabetes and pancreatic cancer) see www.PANCREAS.org.

Traditional methods of diagnosing pancreatic diseases, such as chronic pancreatitis, can be very time consuming and expensive. The diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis requires proving that the pancreas is inflamed and that permanent damage has occurred. This can take five or more years, require repeated blood tests, CT scans, endoscopic testing, and other measures of pancreatic damage before the diagnosis can be made with confidence.
New methods are needed to figure out what is wrong with the pancreas before damage is severe, and to develop the right therapies based on the underlying cause, rather than treating the symptoms. The physicians and scientists at allPANCREAS and their partner companies are working to provide doctors with the tools needed to practice personalized medicine for pancreatic diseases in ways never before possible!
