The pancreas is a gland (like the salivary glands in the mouth) that squirts digestive enzymes into the intestine to help digest food coming out of the stomach. The pancreas also has cells that release insulin into the blood stream that tells the organs of the body what to do with the nutrients from the food. Traditional methods of diagnosing pancreatic diseases, such as chronic pancreatitis, can be very time consuming and expensive. The diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis requires proving that the pancreas is inflamed and that permanent damage has occurred.
